Oiza Yakubu and Nene Yakubu clinched the Girls’ 12 and
10 titles at the 2017 CBN Junior Tennis Championship at the Lagos Lawn
Tennis Club, Onikan, Lagos, on Saturday.
Nene defeated fellow nine-year-old Mary Benjamin from the Navy Club Apapa, Lagos, 8-3, while her left-handed sister Oiza defeated Blessing Otu 8-5.
The Yakubu sisters’ showing was matched by the Port Harcourt-based Kodian Tennis Foundation, who produced two winners and two sibling runners-up.
Timipre Maxwell retained her title by edging teammate Rebecca Ekpeyong 9-7 while David Dawariye easily beat Usman Kushimo from Abeokuta 8-2.
The Boys’ 12 event was won by Daniel Adeleye from Ekiti, who defeated David Ekpeyong from the Kodian Foundation 8-3.
Michael Osewa, the 2016 African Junior championship 16 & Under runner-up, showed his class in overcoming his Lagos Lawn Tennis Club teammate Augustine Stephen 9-8 in the Boys’ 18 final.
The CBN Governor Godwin Emefuele, who was represented by the Acting Director of Corporate Communications Isaac Okoroafor, expressed his delight at the results achieved in the championship and the progress the young boys and girls are making.
He said, “The CBN is very delighted with the impact of our sponsorship, which has helped Nigeria to dominate junior tennis in West and Central Africa, and produced young champions like Moses Michael and has Sylvester Emmanuel at the senior level. We are also very proud of the partnership with the International Tennis Academy, which has maintained a very high standard of organisation and produced these outstanding results.”
